Microsoft : Microsoft lays plans for 'Vistagami' tablets
Posted by sike on 2006/5/27 6:22:03 (30922 reads)
With the first Origami devices out the door, Microsoft is setting its sights on the next generation of tiny tablet PCs--products known within the company as "Vistagami" devices.

The new minitablets are likely to resemble the first of the ultramobile PCs, though they will run Windows Vista, rather than XP. Hopefully, they will come with a lower price tag than the first devices, such as Samsung's Q1, which starts at $1,100.

While Microsoft was under no illusions that it could hit its long-term $500 price goal, the company said Tuesday it was not happy with how expensive the first devices turned out to be.

Playstation 3 : Sony rumored to be limiting PS3 game resales
Posted by sike on 2006/5/27 6:16:02 (26911 reads)
A story picked up by a several Web sites has caused a bit of a stir in the online gaming community. Games Radar is reporting that Sony has warned its retail partners that the selling of used games for the forthcoming PS3 game console will not be permitted.

The report states that Sony's new licensing scheme would dictate that consumers will purchase a license to play a game, rather than buying the game itself. The story has sparked an uproar in many blogs and online discussion forums--with memories of Sony's rootkit DRM debacle still fresh in consumers' minds.

But the rumor is being largely dismissed as only that. Several blogs are quick to point out that a similar story claiming Sony planned to put DRM restrictions on its games surfaced last year and were later debunked.

Vista : Windows Vista Beta 2 Milestone Build 5381
Posted by sike on 2006/5/8 15:53:11 (25619 reads)
Shockingly, Windows Vista Beta 2 has already went into escrow as build 5381 and will be recompiled and rebuilt as build 5381 until it is ready to be released later on this month at the annual 2006 WinHEC. The build is currently in QFE Testing as 5381.3. Due to Beta 2 entering escrow last week, the RC1 branch was created and began with build 5420.0 (winmain.060427-1900) to allow the Vista Labs to continue pressing on with their work. With that being said, the MSDN UACBlog recently posted a shot of build 5421.0 (winmain.060428-1900) publically along with another shot of build 5372.0 (winmain.060418-1800).

P2P : BearShare Settles with RIAA for $30m
Posted by sike on 2006/5/8 15:50:38 (22839 reads)
Free Peers, the company that owned and operated the BearShare network, has agreed to pay $30 million to the Recording Industry Association of America to avoid a copyright infringement lawsuit, court documents indicated Thursday.

Free Peers has also agreed to disband and promised to not operate any unlicensed music download services.

The company was one of seven that received letters last year from the record industry demanding their immediate shutdown. i2Hub and WinMX have since complied, however Warez P2P, Limewire, eDonkey and Soulseek have not.

As part of the settlement, Free Peers would also sell its technology, domain name and user data to iMesh, a legal P2P service. iMesh last year agreed to a $4.1 settlement and relaunched as a licensed P2P operation. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
